Impro Workshops

With acknowledgement to Keith Johnstone

Between September and December 2009 Jon Oram is leading improvisation workshops at St Barnabas School, Quarry Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. What follows is a record of the first six weeks of the course. If you would like to join this Impro Group or book Jon for workshops, contact Claque Theatre.

How to read the workshop notes:
I’ve tried to write the instructions, as I’d speak to the group.
Following some games are notes on side coaching, Group Notes and notes for workshop leaders.
Side - coaching: By side coaching I mean things I might say to players while the game is being carried out. I don’t expect them to stop when I give these instructions, just to absorb or accommodate the instruction while they are playing the game. I might say the same thing several times in different ways.
Notes for Groups: These are notes I might give the group after the exercise is finished. I’ll always open a discussion after or between exercises and encourage the player’s feedback.
Notes to Workshop Leaders: These notes are for those of you who want to teach these exercises and are things I would be watching out for or techniques of teaching the exercise that I wouldn’t necessarily share with the group, though sometimes I do.
Some things we learned: These notes are from discussions by the players and my observations after a game.
