Claque is a theatre production company that galvanises communities through performance. Since 1979, we have been transforming the way in which people view theatre and community through large-scale and inclusive community plays.
“The plays that Claque produces are very much about shared energy. It’s an old fashioned notion; a couple of hundred people come together and surprise themselves by what they can do.”

Claque Theatre began life as the Colway Theatre Trust. The Trust was formed by Ann Jellicoe as a vehicle for exploring and developing the community play as an innovative style of theatre (hear her speaking about it here). In the year 2000, Colway relocated to Kent and changed its name to Claque.
Under the direction of Jon Oram, Claque has produced over 30 community plays all over the United Kingdom and in North America and Europe, making us leaders in community play production and training. The plays are always of excellent artistic quality which we achieve by working with talented playwrights and associates from across the theatre disciplines. Together, we offer design, set and stage management services as well as creative and educational workshops, installations and events. Claque also has a huge store of costumes and props for hire.
The first community play was performed in 1978 in Lyme Regis, Dorset. They usually take 18-24 months to produce and we have two community play projects running parallel at any one time.
